A Bright Future | Kalus

Kalus is an 8-year-old boy from a small village between Pokhara and Kathmandu in Nepal, who could not use his left hand due to a burn sustained when he was a baby. For years, the family did not seek medical attention, simply because they did not realize that anything could be done to help.

In October 2012, Kalus and his mother met Dr. Shankar Rai, ReSurge’s partner in Nepal, who performed surgery to restore the use of his left hand. A week after the surgery, Dr. Rai drove to Kalus’s village. A big smile lit Kalus’s face as the vehicle approached and he recognized a familiar face. Dr. Rai examined Kalus’s healing hand and gave the young boy some advice about working hard in school.

The surgery went very well, and he is expected to recover good use of his hand. Kalus will go back to the hospital for follow-up visits and physical therapy in the future. In the meantime, Kalus continues to do very well in school, excelling in writing and reading.
